WE HAVE OUR COUNTRY BACK!

I am administering this site for Santa Fe Grassroots for Obama volunteers and friends. Now that the election is over, the topics have broadened to local community events. I encourage each of you to find your passion and make it happen by volunteering and getting others involved. If you'd like to share and spread your volunteer interests, write something up and I'll post it. Along those lines, you'll find things here now that I am personally passionate about. So please join me! My best, Gaye Pollitt

HOSTS (an acronym for Help One Student To Succeed) is a reading program for 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. It pairs one student who needs help in reading with one volunteer who wants to make a difference in a student’s life. Each session is 30 minutes during the school day. One-on-one attention with the same student and weekly individualized lesson plans for each child are the key factors to the child’s success...and to the volunteer’s effectiveness and enjoyment. Schedules are arranged to accommodate volunteers and to establish continuing relationships with students. You can volunteer for as little as 30 minutes the same day each week -- but I'm betting once you meet the kids and see the program, you'll sign up for at least 60 or 90 minutes!

No previous experience needed; you don’t need to be a teacher; you don’t have to prepare lesson plans. You just need to love kids and the idea of helping them succeed in the most basic of life’s skills reading!

This is community service at its best and most rewarding. It’s also so much fun! Come see the program in action. Meet Debby Maas, the HOSTS administrator, and Deb Lineback, the HOSTS assistant. Learn about the success rate of the program and how you can become part of it!
